Dictate support
Speak, and your words appear where you type. Dictate transcribes speech on your Mac using downloadable speech models.
Getting started
- Open Dictate and follow setup to allow microphone access.
- The global recording shortcut needs no keyboard permission. When you stop recording, Dictate copies the transcript to the clipboard; press ⌘V in any app to paste it.
- Download the speech model. The first preparation may take a few minutes.
- Press Control–Option–D, speak, then press it again. You can change the shortcut in Settings.

Help & troubleshooting
The shortcut or pasting does not work
If the shortcut is unavailable, choose another combination in Dictate Settings → Dictation. Another app or the system may reserve it. Dictate copies each transcript to the clipboard instead of pasting it for you. Press ⌘V in the app you are using, or choose Copy last transcript in the Dictate menu.
The model will not download
Check your internet connection and available storage. Reopen setup to retry. The initial model download requires an internet connection; speech recognition runs on your Mac afterward.
